Oakland -- Pandora Media, an Oakland company formerly known as Savage
Beast Technologies, said that it has launched its online music discovery service,
which bases its recommendations on more than five years of musicological
study by 30 analysts. The company's "Music Genome Project" studied over 400
musical traits for each song contained in the database, resulting in connections
between songs that reach beyond genre or style. The service lets users enter an
artist or song title, then creates a tailored radio station stream containing songs
that share key musical traits, and provides links to buy them from Amazon or
iTunes. Pandora will offer the service for free to users for the first 10 hours, in
addition to selling unlimited use subscriptions for $3 per month.
