Sunnyvale, Calif. - Microsoft said that its MSN Search arm will join the
Open Content Alliance (OCA), a non-profit effort to create a massive
digital archive of the world's books. With the launch of MSN Book
Search, Microsoft joins Yahoo in supporting the OCA, whose digital
library project has partnered with the Internet Archive to scan public
domain works, as well as those from authors and publishers who have
consented. A similar program from Mountain View-based Google, which
has drawn copyright infringement lawsuits from both authors and
publishers, takes brief snippets of works from all books without first
seeking permission. Microsoft will pay to digitize 150,000 titles, while
Yahoo has said it will pay for digitization of 18,000 works,
