Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Hoping to forge new business relationships and
expand its presence in the East Coast research community, Sunnyvale-
based Yahoo said on Thursday that it has opened a new research center in
New York City and named Ron Brachman as its vice president of
worldwide research operations. The center will focus on key technologies
in the areas of computer science and social media, the company
said.Yahoo Research also has facilities in Sunnyvale, Burbank and
Berkeley, Calif. Brachman most recently served as the director of the
U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA)
Information Processing Technology Office, and previously was a research
vice president at AT&T Labs. He also recently completed a two-year
term as president of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence.
Yahoo spends about $500 million a year on research and development.
