Santa Clara, Calif. -- Applied Materials, a Santa Clara-based supplier of equipment and services to the semiconductor industry, said on Friday that it plans to sell five facilities that it either leases or owns, including one in Hayward. The other facilities are located in Oregon; Massachusetts; South Korea and Japan. The company, which expects to save an average of $29 million a year through 2014, said that all the properties were acquired "either as part of a merger or under business conditions that have changed." The moves will result in pretax charges of about $212 million in the current quarter. The company did not disclose how many jobs would be affected.
