Reston, Va. -- In the weeks leading to Mother's Day, sales soared for online retailers of flowers, gifts and greetings, compared to the same period a year ago, according to new statistics released by Reston-based comScore Networks. Online spending in the category spiked during the week prior to the holiday at $195.8 million in sales, topping the coinciding week last year by nearly $28 million. "Online retail spending related to Mother's Day exhibited strong growth over last year, as increasing numbers of consumers continue to become more comfortable making their purchases online," said Rob Harles, a senior vice president at comScore Networks. "Mother's Day has a way of sneaking up on many consumers, but Internet retailers have done an excellent job adapting to last-minute shoppers to capture their business."
