Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel Capital, the venture capital investment arm of Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel on Monday announced two new investments in foreign WiMAX (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access) firms, signing agreements to create Orascom Telecom WiMAX, an Egyptian joint venture, and Worldmax, a joint venture in The Netherlands. Orascom is the first investment from the Intel Capital Middle East and Turkey Fund, announced last November. Both new companies will be majority-owned by Orascom Telecom of Egypt and Enertel, respectively, with Intel Capital as the lead investor. Intel said that it sees a big future in WiMAX, which provides widespread wireless broadband Internet access in metropolitan areas.
