San Diego -- Increased broadband penetration and greater numbers of PCs and connected game consoles will push the worldwide market for online games from $3.4 billion in 2005 to over $13 billion in 2011, according to a new report from market research firm DFC Intelligence. The online games market includes both subscriptions to massively multiplayer online games, like "World of Warcraft," and the digital distribution of games through direct sales to PCs and next-generation consoles. "Digital distribution and virtual item sales have started to do very well in certain Asian markets and these distribution models are expected to start having increased success on an international basis," said Alexis Madrigal, an analyst with DFC.
