Redwood City, Calif. -- Gynesonics, a Redwood City-based developer of a minimally invasive device to treat uterine fibroid tumors, said that it has raised $16.5 million in its second round of funding, led by Advanced Technology Ventures. InterWest Partners and Abingworth Management also participated. "These funds will allow us to complete our product development and begin our U.S. FDA clinical trial later this year," said Jessica Grossman, the president and founder of Gynesonics. The company's disposable, hand-held device combines ultrasound imaging with radiofrequency energy, allowing gynecologists to identify fibroids and destroy tumors.
