San Jose, Calif. -- Silicon Valley is the "techiest" metro area in America in terms of its concentration of IT workers, according to a new article in Computerworld magazine. With 8.3% of its total workforce considered IT professionals, the area -- which includes San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara -- outpaced Washington, DC, which has 6.1%. Raleigh and Cary, N.C.; Boulder, Colo. and Huntsville, Ala. round out the top five. "It kind of belies some of the perceptions of where the hiring is, where people work in this field," John Challenger, president of outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas told Computerworld. "[Many typically] think that most people in IT work in Silicon Valley, and they might add in Washington state, Seattle and maybe Austin." The area comprising San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont came in 12th.
