San Jose, Calif. -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors rose sharply in August, growing to $21.5 billion, an increase of nearly 5% from the prior year, according to a new report from the San Jose-based Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The figure also is 4.5% higher than the $20.6 billion reported in July. The SIA credited strong sales of NAND flash memory devices, which were up by 48% from the same period in 2006. "August is historically the beginning of the holiday season build by electronics manufacturers, which in turn drives demand for a broad range of semiconductor products," said George Scalise, president of the SIA.
