S.F.-Based Pownce Acquired by Six Apart; to Shut Down Dec. 15

San Francisco -- Pownce, a San Francisco-based microblogging and file-sharing service created by Digg founder Kevin Rose, announced on Monday that it has been acquired by San Francisco-based Six Apart, developers of blogging tools including Vox, Movable Type and TypePad, for an undisclosed sum. Pownce also announced that it will shut down its service for good on Dec. 15. "We're bittersweet about shutting down the service but we believe we'll come back with something much better in 2009," Pownce wrote in a blog post. Six Apart said that Pownce's employees will be joining the company, with co-founders Rose and Daniel Burka becoming advisers. Six Apart's Vox service is similar to Pownce's offering. Both compete with Twitter in the microblogging space.
