Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Wireless carrier Sprint Nextel announced that single-day and first weekend sales for the Palm Pre topped any other device that it has launched. Although the company did not divulge specific figures, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pre sold an estimated 50,000-100,000 units over the weekend, with around 80% purchased by existing Sprint customers. Sales could have been higher, were it not for inventory shortages acknowledged by Sprint. Sources tell The Journal that Verizon also will begin selling the smartphone in January.
