San Francisco -- The U.S. market for virtual goods -- including items in online games, virtual worlds and social network sites -- is expected to reach $1 billion this year, according to a new report published by Inside Network and Serious Business. That figure could rise as high as $1.6 billion by 2010. "While virtual goods have been driving revenues in Asia and Europe for years, 2009 will be remembered as the year virtual goods-based businesses began to scale in the United States," said report co-author Justin Smith, of Inside Network.
