San Francisco -- Wikia, the San Francisco-based wiki-building company started in 2004 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, said on Wednesday that it has acquired the LyricWiki database of licensed song lyrics. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Lyrics is one of the most commonly searched terms on the Internet today, and music fans can now access the largest collection of legitimate information about the songs they want to know about," said Gil Penchina, the CEO of Wikia. As part of the agreement, Wikia also has paid an undisclosed sum to Sony's Gracenote to license song lyrics, ensuring royalties are paid to music publishers. The deal will bring Wikia's custom tools to LyricWiki, including a WYSIWYG editor, blogs and a Q&A section where fans can post queries about music and receive answers from the community.
