Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Canesta, a Sunnyvale-based developer of 3D image sensors, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $16 million in a new round of funding from returning backers Carlyle Growth Partners, Hotung Venture Group and Venrock, as well as new investors Quanta Computer and SMSC. The company said that it will use the funds for business expansion and working capital. Canesta's 3D camera chips provide a real-time, 3D "depth map" of the surrounding area to PCs and consumer electronics like televisions, video games and smartphones. The technology can be used for hands-free gesture control, facial recognition, avatar control in virtual worlds and other augmented reality applications.
