Mountain View, Calif. -- Playdom, a Mountain View-based developer of games for social networks, said on Monday that it has acquired Merscom, a North Carolina firm that develops online and social games for third parties. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Merscom is currently developing games for Sea World, Purina, National Geographic and NBC Universal. Playdom said that the deal will help it to develop partnerships with global brands. "We believe that brands matter and that over time, as the social gaming industry matures, games which incorporate content from popular culture and widely respected brands will garner larger market share than those without it," said John Pleasants, Playdom's CEO. Merscom founders Kirk Owen and Lloyd Melnick and their team of over 20 producers, designers, artists and engineers will remain with the company.
