South San Francisco -- Solazyme, a South San Francisco-based developer of technology that allows algae to produce oil, is the Bay Area's highest-ranked company in the newly released Inc. 500, which ranks the fastest-growing private companies based on three-year revenue growth. Solazyme, which ranks No. 2 -- behind only New York-based ideeli -- went public in May after raising $197.6 million in its IPO. The company uses microbial fermentation to produce renewable oil that can be used for fuels, chemicals, nutritional food ingredients and health and wellness products. Numerous other Bay Area companies also made the list led by San Francisco-based Astro Gaming (No. 13), San Francisco-based Advantis Global Services (No. 14), San Jose-based Agiliance (No. 39), San Jose-based A10 Networks (No. 54) and Emeryville-based Nest Collective (No. 77).
