Mountain View, Calif. -- Earth Networks, the operator of WeatherBug, said on Tuesday it has partnered with Colorado-based Radiometrics to launch a new network that will continuously monitor the planetary boundary layer and above. The companies initially will deploy 10 sites in California, recording data such as temperature, humidity and liquid profiles in a bid to help meteorologists improve mesoscale forecasts and storm warnings. Currently, boundary layer observations are made using radiosondes, commercial aircraft soundings, radar and a small number of wind profilers and tall towers. "The planetary boundary layer is the single most important under-sampled part of the atmosphere," said Bob Marshall, the president and CEO of Earth Networks, which has West Coast offices in Mountain View.
